Signs of A Compromised Skin Barrier

Example of a compromised skin barrier

A lot of people think that they have sensitive skin when in fact they are actually dealing with a compromised skin barrier.

Your skin’s barrier helps prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and defends your skin from outside aggressors. The skin barrier can easily be weakened by UV exposure, aging/genetics, and bad skincare products which can lead to other skin issues.

So what are signs of a compromised skin barrier? Let’s dive into it!

Dryness/dullness. The moisture in your skin will escape and evaporate. It can also leave signs of rough texture, tightness, or flakiness.

Redness.: Cracks in the skin allow irritants and allergens to sneak through, which can cause an inflammatory reaction.

Sensitivity. An imbalance of lipids in the skin’s barrier may cause sensitivity by stinging or burning.

Breakouts. Your Skin’s barrier is meant to keep things out. So a weakened skin barrier will allow bacteria to penetrate the skin, making it more likely for blemishes and flare-ups of acne to happen.

The good news is, the Skin’s barrier can be repaired with the right treatment plan, skincare routine, and some lifestyle changes.

If this sounds like something you might be dealing with, schedule an in-studio consultation or virtual skin evaluation.
